Create Subpages

This friendly guide introduces the concept of "Parent" and "Child" pages. It helps beginners understand how to build a nested structure in Umbraco 17+, allowing you to organize your website logically. You'll gain the basics of creating pages within other pages, which automatically helps build your site’s dropdown menus and breadcrumbs.

The Parent-Child Relationship

In Umbraco 17+, the Content Tree works like a folder system. A Parent Page acts as a container, and a Subpage lives inside it. For example, if you have a parent page called "Services," you can create subpages for "Web Design" and "SEO." This foundation keeps your Backoffice tidy and tells search engines how your information is related.

Permissions and Document Types

Before jumping into subpages, it’s important to know that not every page can be a parent. In the Umbraco 17+ settings, specific "Document Types" are allowed to host certain subpages. No deep tech knowledge is needed—if you right-click a page and don't see the option you want, it simply means that page type isn't configured to hold that specific subpage yet. Start by right-clicking an existing page to see what "Child" options are available to you.

Action Steps to Create a Subpage

  1. Select the Parent: In the Content section, find the page you want to place a subpage inside.

  2. Open the Create Menu: Click the three dots (...) next to the parent page name or right-click it.

  3. Select 'Create': A list of allowed subpage types will appear.

  4. Choose Page Type: Select the type of page you want to build (e.g., "Web Page" or "Blog Post").

  5. Enter Name & Content: Give your subpage a name and fill in your details.

  6. Publish: Click Save and Publish. Your new page will now appear indented underneath the parent page in the tree.

Pro-Tip: Most uSkinned templates will automatically add your new subpage to a dropdown menu under the parent link. If it doesn't appear, check the "Navigation" tab on the page to ensure "Hide from Navigation" is not checked!

Where Next?

Now that you’ve mastered how to "Create Subpages" to organize your internal navigation, it’s time to look at the one part of your website that stays consistent no matter where your visitors go: the very bottom of the page.

Your subpages help people find specific information, but your Footer is where they look for the "big picture"—things like your office address, social media links, and legal fine print. Your next step is learning how to manage "Footer Content".
