Building a hierarchy for your website is a seamless process in uSkinned 6+ and Umbraco 17 (LTS). This guide will show you how to organize your content by adding sub-pages (also known as "child nodes") to any existing page on your site.
By creating sub-pages, you are effectively building your site’s navigation and structure within your "digital filing cabinet".
Step 1: Locate the Parent Page
-
Log in to your Umbraco Backoffice.
-
Navigate to the Content section on the left-hand side.
-
Use the modern caret icons (v) to expand your site’s tree structure.
-
Find the page you want to be the "parent" (the page that will sit above your new sub-page).
Step 2: Initialize Your Sub Page
You have two ways to add a sub-page:
-
Standard Create: Right-click the parent page (or click the three dots ···) and select Create, then choose Web Page from the list of options.
-
Quick Create: Right-click the parent page and select Quick Create. This is the fastest method if you need to map out several sub-pages at once.
Step 3: Name and Publish
-
Enter a Name: Type your sub-page title at the top. uSkinned automatically generates a clean, search-engine-friendly URL based on this name.
-
Save and Publish: Click the green Save and Publish button.
-
Instant Update: Thanks to the Umbraco 17 Management API, your new sub-page will appear in the tree instantly without needing to refresh your browser.
Pro-Tips for Better Structure
-
Hierarchy Logic: When you move or delete a parent page later, all of its sub-pages will automatically follow it.
-
Navigation Control: If you want your sub-page to exist but not appear in your site's dropdown menus, go to the Settings tab and toggle "Hide from Navigation" to "Yes".
-
SEO Automation: uSkinned handles the URL structure for you. For example, a sub-page named "Our Team" under an "About" parent will automatically have the URL yoursite.com/about/our-team/.

Pro-Tip: Most uSkinned templates will automatically add your new subpage to a dropdown menu under the parent link. If it doesn't appear, check the "Navigation" tab on the page to ensure "Hide from Navigation" is not checked!
Where Next?
Now that you’ve mastered how to "Create Subpages" to organize your internal navigation, it’s time to look at the one part of your website that stays consistent no matter where your visitors go: the very bottom of the page.
Your subpages help people find specific information, but your Footer is where they look for the "big picture"—things like your office address, social media links, and legal fine print. Your next step is learning how to manage "Footer Content".
